Abbotsford Heat News Release

HAMILTON ON - The Abbotsford Heat have started off their nine game road trip in great style. After knocking off second place Rochester on Friday night, the HEAT overcame an early deficit to defeat the North Division leading Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton on Saturday night.

Shawn Belle opened the scoring for the Bulldogs, who played with just 16 skaters due to injury and players being called away to their parent club, the Montreal Canadiens. Belle was able to walk in to the top of the left faceoff circle and beat Heat goalie David Shantz with the Bulldogs first shot of the game at 2:59 of the opening period.

Minutes later, on a Heat power play, Cam Cunning would equalize for Abbotsford. Cunning, parked to the right of Bulldogs keeper Curtis Sanford, lifted a Jason Jaffray rebound past the Hamilton goalie to even the score at 7:53 of period one. For Cunning, he now has goals in his last three games and eleven on the season.

After a scoreless second period, JD Watt would step up in the third period for the visitors. Watt would take a great cross-ice feed from Keith Seabrook at full speed. Watt would streak in and put a shot thru Sanford and just inside the post to give the Heat the lead. Watt scores his seventh of the season at 7:25 of the third period to give the Heat the lead.

Late in the game, with Staffan Kronwall in the penalty box and Curtis Sanford pulled for the extra attacker, Hamilton would have a great chance with just 15 seconds to play. North Vancouver's Ben Maxwell was found alone out in front of Shantz. Maxwell would one time a shot past Shantz, but clang the puck off the crossbar.

David Shantz turned aside 20 of 21 shots for the win, his third straight for the HEAT.

With the win, the Heat move to 2-0 on their nine game road odyssey, and are now 4-0-0-1 in their past five games. Abbotsford will now move north to Toronto for a Monday morning game versus the Toronto Marlies. The Honda Way pregame show will take place at 10:45 am, Pacific Standard Time, with the faceoff at 11 am from the Centre of the Universe.
