Abbotsford Heat News Release

ROCHESTER NY - The Abbotsford Heat opened their longest road trip of the season with a 3-2 win over their division rivals, the Rochester Americans in American Hockey League play on Friday night.

David Shantz stopped 28 of 30 shots to earn the victory for the HEAT, who are now 3-0-0-1 in their past four games. Cam Cunning, Evan Barlow and Brett Sutter scored the goals in the victory for Abbotsford (24-23-4-4). Clay Wilson and Jamie Johnson replied for the Americans, who tried to rally from a 3-0 deficit late in the third period, only to fall short.

After a scoreless first period, the HEAT would open the scoring. Cam Cunning would convert a rebound past Americans goaltender Alexander Salak after some hard work by Colin Stuart started the play. Stuart would circumnavigate the Americans zone before sliding a pass back to Gord Baldwin at the left point. Baldwin's shot would be stopped by Salak, as was the rebound by Garth Murray. But it was Cunning's shot that finally beat the Amerks keeper to open the scoring at 5:24 of the middle frame. Just over three minutes later, new Heat forward Evan Barlow would double the lead on the HEAT power play. Barlow would jam in a Staffan Kronwall point shot past Salak at 8:32. The HEAT would hold a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.

Early in the third, Brett Sutter would strike against the Americans again. Sutter scored his sixth goal of the season, and his third versus the Americans, snapping a wrist shot crisply over the shoulder of Salak as he broke in down the left side of the Americans zone. Wilson and Johnson would score late goals for the Americans, Wilson on a five on three power play, and Johnson with the net empty for Rochester. But the Heat would hold for the win.

Abbotsford opens their nine game road trip with a win and will look to build on their victory on Saturday afternoon versus the Hamilton Bulldogs. The puck will drop at the Copps Coliseum at 4 pm Pacific time.
