Abbotsford Heat News Release
Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat were edged 1-0 by the Charlotte Checkers (AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes) in their final meeting of the season on Saturday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre (AESC).
The Heat outshot the Checkers by a 41-22 margin but surrendered a late power play goal which stood as the winner. Justin Peters posted his sixth shutout of the season, finishing the weekend in Abbotsford with 69 saves on 70 shots to earn two wins.
The game was scoreless through 40 minutes. The Heat outshot the Checkers 17-3 in the third period, but Chris Terry's power play goal at 15:34 stood as the lone goal in the game. Terry's 20th goal of the season was assisted by Luke Pither and Justin Shug.
Leland Irving made his eighth start of the season for the Heat and stopped 21 of 22 shots in the loss. Irving has stopped 57 of 61 shots in two appearances since being assigned by the Calgary Flames.
The Heat finished without a goal on seven power play opportunities, while the penalty kill erased two of three Charlotte man advantages.
Next weekend the Heat will close their current four-game home stand with a pair of games against the Houston Aeros (AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild). Friday's game is Pink in the Rink Night, dedicated to supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. It is also the next 'Loonie, Toonie, Dog 'N Brew' night at the AESC with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 PM PST.
