Inter Miami CF News Release
MIAMI - Inter Miami CF announced today that head coach Phil Neville has signed a contract extension ahead of the 2023 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
"We are excited to continue our partnership with Phil and build on the foundation put in place this year. He has helped Inter Miami build a winning culture, and we feel our processes, collaboration and communication have begun to bear fruit. We are ready for the road ahead and are confident we are heading in the right direction," said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.
"It's a great honor to stay at Inter Miami. I've always thought long-term, I've always thought that I want to be at this Club for a long time. I think we're in the early growth period of this Club, the early building process and I feel as if we've made great strides over the last two years, but by no means is the journey finished. In 2022 we finished sixth in the league, we got into playoffs. But that's not success, that's progression. The expectation is to win," said Neville.
Following a significant reshuffling ahead of the 2022 season that included the addition of 18 players, Neville helped guide Inter Miami to its most successful regular season yet in 2022, taking the team to its second playoff appearance in its three-year history. Notably, the team achieved Club-record points total (48), win total (14), goals scored (47), and highest seeding (sixth) this season.
Additionally, Neville helped guide the team to a season full of milestones that highlighted the culture and attitude he aimed to instill. In 2022, Inter Miami picked up 21 points from losing positions, tied for second most in the league, and thrived at DRV PNK Stadium, picking up the third-most home wins of any team in the league (10) and sixth-most points at home (33).
Led by Neville, the Club materialized one of its main pillars of developing young talents, providing valuable playing time to players such as the team's second-leading scorer Leonardo Campana, MLS Goalkeeper of the Year finalist Drake Callender, team-leading assist provider Bryce Duke, and SuperDraft picks Aimé Mabika and Ryan Sailor. Under his helm, the team also signed another Academy graduate, Noah Allen, who became the first Academy product to start for the First Team.
Neville was appointed in January 2021, joining from the England Women's National Team, whom he led to the 2019 SheBelieves Cup title. He had also experienced coaching stints as an assistant with Valencia CF, Manchester United and the England Men's Under-21s. Neville also had a distinguished playing career of 20 years featuring for English Premier League sides Manchester United, Everton FC and the England National Team.
