The Story:
Swift Current struck first, but two response goals from Chaz Lucius and four points from James Stefan carried the Winterhawks (32-8-2-1) to a 6-3 win over the Broncos (22-19-0-2) on Friday night.
Jan Špunar made 25 saves on 28 shots as the Winterhawks won their fourth consecutive contest.
Swift Current kicked off a back-and-forth flurry 5:23 into the contest on Connor Hvidston's 11th of the year, but Lucius responded for Portland with his first of the night, a laser from the top of the circles into the top corner at 12:34.
The Broncos posted a response of their own 4:43 into the second with Caleb Wyrostok lighting the lamp to take the lead. As he did in the first, though, Lucius knotted things up with another top-shelf finish from Jack O'Brien's centering feed soon after. Portland poured it on from there, with Lucius setting up Stefan three minutes later and Robbie Fromm-Delorme hammering home an Aidan Litke feed from the dead slot at 19:17 of the period.
Josh Filmon grabbed another for Swift Current to bring his club back within a goal midway through the third, but empty-net strikes from Stefan and Luca Cagnoni iced a 6-3 win for Portland.
The Winterhawks are back in action tomorrow night from Seattle as they take on the Thunderbirds. Fans can watch the game live on Portland's CW, and puck drop is set for 6:00 P.M.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"Feels great (to be back), don't have too many systems with the Top Prospects game, so it's good to be back with a system where you know where everyone's gonna be. Obviously, I thought we played really well tonight, and now we just gotta keep on going for Seattle (tomorrow)."
