Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings got 44 saves from Kolby Hay on Friday night as he recorded his first career WHL shutout in the team's 3-0 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen.
The Oil Kings raced out to an early 2-0 lead after taking advantage of a couple Calgary turnovers before the game was five minutes old.
Gavin Hodnett opened the scoring with his eighth of the season at 3:29 of the first after he picked off a Hitmen breakout pass, broke in on a partial breakaway and slipped the puck under the goal stick of a sprawling Brayden Peters.
Just 1:01 later, it would be Dawson Seitz intercepting a failed breakout pass by the Hitmen and then skating the puck into the right-circle and snapping a shot short-side, top-shelf over the left shoulder of Peters for his second of the season.
The Hitmen fired 13 shots the way of Hay in the opening 20 but could not solve the Edmonton goaltender as the Oil Kings took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, Hay remained busy facing 17 more Calgary shots, but just like the first period, he was able to kick each of them out to maintain his team's 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Hitmen kept up their attack, but Hay would not blink turning in 13 more saves to send the Hitmen home empty-handed.
In the final minute, Noah Boyko hit the empty net to punctuate the victory.
Hay finished the night making 44 saves, while Peters turned in 27 for the Hitmen. The Oil Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play while their penalty kill was a perfect 7-for-7.
