Hawks Win 19th Straight at Home with 7-3 Victory Over Everett

The Portland Winterhawks (34-14-2-1) made it 19 wins in a row at home with a 7-3 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips (12-31-1-8) Friday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in front of 6,906 fans.

The win extended the franchise record for consecutive wins at home. Brendan Leipsic and Cam Reid each had three points for Portland in the win.

The Hawks were perfect on special teams Friday, going 3-3 on the power play and 7-7 on the penalty kill.

The Silvertips opened the scoring 4:29 into the game on a goal by Josh Birkholz, but the Hawks quickly answered back when Brendan Leipsic scored just over a minute later on a breakaway, beating Everett netminder Austin Lotz to tie the game at 1-1. With an assist on the play, rookie Layne Viveiros registered his first career point.

Leipsic struck again with another breakaway goal at the 12:17 mark of the first, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead, but Everett tied it at 2-2 at the 13:36 mark on a goal by Ryan Murray. The Hawks regained the lead late in the period when Troy Rutkowski scored to give Portland a 3-2 lead they'd take into the second period.

Just 19 seconds into the second period they extended the lead to 4-2 on a goal by Oliver Gabriel, his eighth of the season. Portland's Cam Reid then scored a power play marker at the 12:24 mark to put the Hawks up 5-2, a lead they would take into the third period.

Seventeen seconds into the third Everett's Reid Petryk scored to cut it to 5-3, but midway through the period Hawks defenseman Derrick Pouliot registered a power play goal to put Portland back up by three, 6-3. Oliver Gabriel then scored another power play goal at the 15:33 mark to round out the scoring in the 7-3 win.

Mac Carruth picked up his league-leading 31st win in goal, making 29 saves on 32 shots. His Everett counterpart, Austin Lotz, allowed seven goals on 31 shots.

Prior to the game, the Hawks inducted former player and coach Brent Peterson into the franchise's Hall of Fame. Peterson was the team's original captain in 1976 when the team moved from Edmonton, and was head coach of the 1998 Memorial Cup-winning team.

During the game, the Hawks hosted a silent auction that included autographed jerseys and sticks from former players like Marian Hossa, Brenden Morrow, Scott Nichol and Jason LaBarbera, and the auction raised $6,900 for the Peterson Foundation For Parkinson's.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they host the Vancouver Giants at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
