Medicine Hat, Alta. - Trailing by one entering the third period, the Winterhawks rattled off four unanswered goals to take a 6-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Wednesday night. Josh Davies and Diego Buttazzoni each scored twice as the Hawks snapped a three-game skid.
Jack O'Brien kicked off the late barrage with a breakaway marker 2:55 into the final frame, followed less than a minute later by Davies' second of the night to take the lead. Buttazzoni tacked on two power-play tallies midway through the period to stretch his point streak to 13 games and put the game out of reach.
The Tigers capitalized on early momentum with the game's first goal at 5:37 from Tyler MacKenzie, but Gabe Klassen teed up a response for Portland three minutes later. The Hawks' captain picked up his eighth of the year when a bouncing puck found him in the slot and he wired it glove-side to tie the game. Penalty trouble once again haunted the Hawks, though, and Hunter St. Martin restored the hosts' lead on a power play before the end of the frame.
Medicine Hat grabbed a 3-1 advantage early in the second stanza on a seam pass to Kadon McCann at 3:26, but again the Hawks responded later in the frame. Davies deflected home his sixth of the season on the power play after Portland killed a series of penalties - including a five-minute major doled out to James Stefan - to make it 3-2 and set the stage for the Hawks' big final frame.
Jan Špunar - reigning WHL Goaltender of the Month - posted 22 saves on 25 shots for the win, while Evan May turned aside 26 of 32 shots for the Tigers.
Portland is back in action on Friday in Swift Current at 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time.
