Wheat Kings Start Mini Series against Pats in Regina
November 2, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Despite being the Brandon Wheat Kings' closest geographical rival, the Regina Pats have only played one game against them so far this season back on opening night. The two teams are going to see all of each other that they can stomach over the next nine days, however.
Three of the Wheat Kings' next four games will be against the Pats, starting on Friday, November 3 in Regina. It will be the first trip there for the Wheat Kings since a 1-0 win in the preseason.
Brandon comes into that game on a hot streak. Facing down the Moose Jaw Warriors, Saskatoon Blades, and Prince George Cougars in succession (all ranked in the CHL top-ten) the boys in black and gold grabbed five of a possible six points.
"We should feel confident, we should feel good about our game," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "We have kind of an odd situation where we play Regina a lot here in a short period of time. It's almost like a mini-playoff series in the middle of the season. It's going to be intense."
While the Pats don't have the firepower of Prince George or the NHL-drafted talent of Moose Jaw, they've been punching above their weight class all season and are neck-and-neck with the Wheat Kings in the standings. In fact, the Pats are one of six teams within three points of first place in the Eastern Conference.
"We're still in the first third of the season, but at the same time you've got to start looking at those type of things," said Murray. "I don't see the separation in the division or conference starting anytime soon. Here's an opportunity for us to create that separation on some of the teams we're playing against. There are six big points on the line."
The Pats won the only matchup of the season between the two teams so far, a 7-6 overtime thriller on opening night, but the Wheat Kings have added four players back to their lineups from NHL camps since then. Among those four is captain Nate Danielson, who stretched his point streak to four games with a goal against Prince George.
"We just need Nate to be Nate," said Murray. "He just needs to play his game and not put too much pressure as far as producing on himself. When he's at his best, he's using his speed obviously and creating using his linemates."
The Wheat Kings and Pats will meet in Regina at 7:00 local time, 8:00 Central.
