Wheat Kings Keep Point Streak Alive Against Cougars

November 2, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Since a crushing loss at the hands of the Portland Winterhawks, the Brandon Wheat Kings have not lost in regulation. Faced with their third consecutive top-ten ranked opponent on home ice, they again fought their way to a single point, but this time could not claim the second.

Bauer Dumanski scored with 23 seconds left in overtime and the Wheat Kings fell 3-2 to the Prince George Cougars. Jayden Wiens and Nate Danielson scored for Brandon, while Carson Bjarnason stopped 28 of 31 shots flung his way.

"I thought we were just ok," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "We had a little bit of pushback in the third period, which was nice, but in the first two they were a little too few and far between for me. But they're a good team and it was nice to fight it back in the third period to get it to overtime."

Despite waves of all-star firepower, it was depth scoring that opened the game for Prince George as Arjun Bawa snapped home a shot from the bottom of the left circle after getting a feed from below the goal line. But the Wheat Kings had the answer before the period was out, as Wiens finished off a three-way passing play with Nolan Flamand and Quinn Mantei.

In the second, the only goal belonged to the Cougars, though it came with some controversy. Riley Heidt appeared to trip Kayden Sadhra-Kang in the act of stealing the puck, but the play went uncalled and, breaking in alone, Heidt snapped it past Bjarnason for the lead.

Danielson provided the tying goal for the Wheat Kings in the third with a perfectly placed bullet of a shot to the top corner. Despite chances on the power play to pull ahead, however, the Wheat Kings could not find the elusive third goal.

They had their chances in overtime as well, but the last chance of the game went to Dumanski on a breakaway of his own making. He fired one low and hard past Bjarnason for the winner.

The Wheat Kings finish their homestand having claimed five of a possible six points. Their next game is a short swing up the road to Regina on Friday, November 3. Puck drop is 8:00 Central Time.
