Portland Winterhawks News Release
Kent, Wash. - Two goals from Josh Davies helped the Winterhawks push their point streak to six straight games (5-0-1-0), but Coster Dunn's second of the night just 20 seconds into overtime gave the Thunderbirds a 5-4 win on Friday night.
Portland raced out to a 2-0 lead late in the first through a Luca Cagnoni seeing-eye shot and Davies' first of the night. Carrying the puck across the top of the offensive zone, Cagnoni spun a shot on net that ricocheted through Scott Ratzlaff for the game's first goal at 14:11. Davies then doubled the lead on the power play, whacking home a second-chance shot after Jack O'Brien set him up from behind the goal line.
Seattle sparked a comeback with a goal from Bryce Pickford in the waning moments of the first period, then Simon Lovsin tallied twice in 5:25 to open the second and give the T-Birds a 3-2 lead. Diego Buttazzoni responded for Portland with a power-play missile from the right circle at 16:33, but Dunn's first goal of the game 1:44 later restored Seattle's advantage.
In need of a goal entering the third, the Winterhawks again turned to Davies early in the frame after Gabe Klassen found him alone in the high slot. The Florida Panthers prospect made no mistake with a top-shelf rip to tie the game and force overtime, but the Hawks couldn't secure the extra point.
Nick Avakyan finished with 21 saves on 26 shots for Portland, while Scott Ratzlaff earned the win with 38 saves on 42 shots.
The Winterhawks and Thunderbirds are set to face off once again tomorrow night at 6:00 P.M., this time at the VMC for the Winterhawks' annual Pride Night.
