The Story:

Down by two in the waning moments of the game, the Winterhawks (34-8-2-1) roared back to life to ultimately take a 4-3 victory over the Spokane Chiefs (9-32-2-2) in overtime.

Dante Giannuzzi, starting his second game in as many nights, stopped 25 of 28 shots to help the Hawks win their sixth straight game.

After 14 minutes of scoreless hockey to start the game, Spokane broke the deadlock on Jaren Brinson's first as a Chief to head into the intermission up 1-0. Portland pushed for a response in the second period and found it on the power play off the stick of James Stefan. Chaz Lucius and Luca Cagnoni played a give-and-go at the blue line before the former slipped down the right-wing side and fed Stefan with a seam pass at the left circle, which he then fired top-shelf, exploding Spokane's water bottle in the process.

Portland's push soon slowed, though, and Spokane took the lead back on Cade Hayes' 10th of the year at 18:12 of the second. Spokane struck again early in the third, as Berkly Catton lit the lamp for the team's largest lead of the night. But with 5:29 to play, the Winterhawks gained life as McCleary whacked home a Luca Cagnoni rebound to get his team within one. The resurgent Hawks began to swarm, and ultimately tied things up with 17 seconds left as Chaz Lucius came up clutch again, poking a loose puck across the line to force overtime.

Then, after Giannuzzi saved the game with a massive save on a 3-on-0 in overtime, Alscher netted the winner with a low shot off the rush at 3:09 of the extra frame, sealing both points for Portland.

The Winterhawks are back in action on the road this week, taking on the B.C. Division-leading Kamloops Blazers at the Sandman Centre at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:

"Yesterday we were battling really hard and if you're gonna lose today, the battle yesterday would lose the advantage (vs. Seattle). S0 I really think that had something to do with the turnaround today."

Winterhawks defenseman Marek Alscher
