Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks Hit the Road with Six Straight Wins

January 30, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Winterhawks' winning ways continued this week with four straight victories, starting and ending with big wins over Spokane. The team has now won six consecutive games to leap into first place in the Western Conference and a tie for first in the WHL with the Winnipeg ICE. Chaz Lucius netted 11 points last week to earn WHL Player of the Week honors, and four Hawks skaters led the entire league in scoring last week.

Looking ahead, the Hawks are back on the road for two games on Wednesday and Friday before returning home for Sportlandia Night on Saturday!

Hot Hawks:

Forward Chaz Lucius led all WHL skaters last week with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. Portland's newest acquisition has multiple points in each of his six games played with the club and has scored in three consecutive contests.

Forward James Stefan stretched his point streak to six games with three goals and seven helpers in four games last week. Playing on a line with Lucius and O'Brien, Stefan has chipped in three straight multi-point outings heading into this week.

Forward Jack O'Brien found the scoresheet in all four games with two goals and five assists in that span. Centering Lucius and Stefan, O'Brien has only been held pointless once in the last six games, posting nine points since Jan. 20.

Defenseman Luca Cagnoni returned from the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and made an immediate impact, pushing his point streak to seven straight games and notching multiple points in all three games played last week.

Goaltender Dante Giannuzzi picked up wins in all three of his starts to push his personal win streak to four straight games. The 20-year-old puckstopper has won 10 of 12 starts dating back to Dec. 7.

Portland 4 vs Spokane 3 OT (Sunday):

Down by two in the waning moments of the game, the Winterhawks roared back to life to ultimately take a 4-3 victory over the Spokane Chiefs in overtime.

The Week Ahead:

We're back with three games this week!

First, the Hawks cross the border once more to take on the B.C. Division-leading Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. As they prepare to host the Memorial Cup in June, the Blazers loaded up at the trade deadline, acquiring Everett Silvertips standouts Olen Zellweger and Ryan Hofer in a nuclear deal for four players and a whopping 10 draft picks.

Then, it's a home-and-home with the upstart Tri-City Americans on the weekend. The two teams will battle it out in Kennewick first at 7:00 on Friday, then head south to the Rose City for Portland's lone home game of the week at 6:00 on Saturday.

That Saturday tilt is Sportlandia Night in the VMC, where we'll celebrate all things Portland sports! We're bringing the Blazers, Timbers, Thorns and more together for a special night on our ice. See you there!
