Hats off to Ness in Loss
November 3, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Griffin Ness stacked up a second period hat trick, but it was not enough to propel the Waterloo Black Hawks to more than a 4-3 loss Saturday at Mystique Ice Center.
The Fighting Saints pulled to a 2-0 lead in the opening period on a pair of goals by Will Knierim. On a power play at 4:37, he redirected a Matias Maccelli shot from just outside the crease. Then with less than a minute to go before intermission, Knierim pounced on the rebound of James Sanchez's first try to score from close range.
Ness brought the Black Hawks back even in the second period...twice. Ness scored two goals in 32 seconds, beginning at 3:12, when he found a way to bounce in a shot in from below the icing line. On the ensuing shift, Patrick Guzzo won an offensive zone draw to Kyle Haskins. He handed to puck off to Ness in the slot, and Ness fired his shot home.
The Saints retook the lead at 15:13 on a try by Maccelli, who was set up out of the left corner. However, Ness tied it with a power play one-timer from the left dot with 5.7 seconds remaining in the period.
Logan Pietila scored the lone goal of the third on a low shot from the high slot at 9:40. Goaltender Aaron Randazzo turned away everything else that came his way, making 28 saves for the win.
Following Saturday's game in Dubuque, the Black Hawks will travel farther east for their games next weekend. Friday, Waterloo visits the Chicago Steel before moving on to Green Bay for a matchup against the Gamblers next Saturday.
