Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
CHICAGO - Mike Hamilton said at the beginning of the week he wanted his Muskegon Lumberjacks to get back on track right away.
He got his wish, as the Lumberjacks have responded in a big way to their first loss of the season suffered last Saturday.
First Muskegon got even with the talented Team USA 18U squad with a win Thursday morning, then it hit the road Saturday and made sure to build another win streak with a 5-2 win over the Chicago Steel at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
The Lumberjacks pulled away from the Steel with a 4-goal explosion in the third period to post a perfect 2-0 week.
Brock Bremer broke a 1-all tie early in the third period with a shorthanded goal, and Nolan Sullivan scored the game-winner at the 8:45 mark to send Muskegon to its second straight win.
Bremer's goal was his second of the game and fourth of the season. It came shortly after the Steel thought they may have scored the go-ahead goal on the power play when a Steel player crashed into Muskegon goalie Brandon Bussi and the puck had gone into the net.
But no goal was ruled on the play, and after a review it was confirmed no goal, and Bremer and company took advantage.
The Lumberjacks improve to 10-1 overall, good for a USHL-best 20 points. The Steel fall to 4-6-1.
Bremer scored the only goal of the first period on an assist from Oliver MacDonald. Chicago's Robert Mastrosimone scored the lone goal in the second to knot the game up heading into the third period.
Matteo Pietroniro trimmed Muskegon's lead to 3-2 midway through the third period, but could get no closer. Muskegon's Jack Williams added some insurance with his first goal of the season with 3:58 to play, assisted by Mikael Hakkarainen, and added an empty-net goal with 18 seconds to play.
Bussi made 19 saves for his 10th win of the season. Muskegon went 0-for-3 on the power play while Chicago went 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
