Hartzell Returns to Wheeling, Sylvester to AHL
April 9, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced two transactions, which both take effect immediately. Pittsburgh has assigned goaltender Eric Hartzell to the Nailers, while forward Cody Sylvester has been recalled to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Hartzell, 24, returns to Wheeling, where he has won each of his last five starts, improving his ECHL record to 8-4-1 on the season. During his last five outings with the Nailers, Eric has posted a 1.99 goals against average and a .930 save percentage, earning wins against Elmira (2), Toledo (2), and Reading. The rookie out of Quinnipiac University has also spent significant time in the AHL, with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, compiling a 10-8-1 record in 25 appearances. The month of January was Hartzell's best, as he was one of three current/former Wheeling backstops (Darling, Mannino) to win CCM AHL Goaltender of the Month this season.
Sylvester, 21, currently ranks fourth on the Nailers in scoring, with 42 points in 49 games, while holding the top spot in goals, with 24. While his play has been consistent from start to finish, Cody's numbers began to skyrocket in the months of February and March, as he racked up 27 points in 23 games, which included six multiple-point games, as well as his first career hat trick on March 14th. The native of Kelowna, BC has also spent time in the AHL this season, recording two goals in 17 games, including the game winning goal in his debut with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on November 20th. Sylvester was named WesBanco Rookie of the Year for the Nailers last weekend.
The Nailers wrap up the regular season on Friday and Saturday, when they play a pair of 7:35 tilts against the Cincinnati Cyclones at US Bank Arena. Wheeling's first home playoff games will take place on April 23rd, 25th, and 26th (if necessary), all at 7:00.
