Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Lakewood BlueClaws (9-17) picked up five runs over the first two frames, rode outstanding pitching, and shutout the Charleston RiverDogs (13-12) 6-0 Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park. The win marks the second in a row for Lakewood and ups the record to 6-6 over the Southern opponents in 2013.
For the second time in as many games the BlueClaws jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Roman Quinn walked and stole second, before Carlos Tocci moved him to third on an infield single.
The runners remained at the corners for Willie Carmona as he faced the starter Daniel Camarena. Camarena threw a pitch that escaped the grasp of the catcher Peter O'Brien and allowed Quinn to score on a passed ball. Two hitters later Tocci moved to third with Alejandro Villalobos at the plate and scored on another passed ball by O'Brien and the BlueClaws had the two-run lead.
Camarena (0-2) struggled again in the second frame and allowed two runs on two hits. Mitch Walding scored on Chace Numata's single and Quinn plated Brian Pointer on an RBI fielder's choice with out to double the lead at 4-0. Quinn then scored on an error by the shortstop Cito Culver.
The BlueClaws added a run in the fourth when Pointer scored on a caught stealing by Quinn. Quinn was picked off from first, but got into a rundown long enough for Pointer to score from third, before the tag was applied and the third out recorded.
On the mound, it was Nicholas Hanson taking the ball in his first start of the season and the fourth of his career. The righty waivered in the first, but pitched around two walks in the frame.
Hanson (1-0) retired 10 out of 11, and had not allowed a hit until the top of the fourth inning with two down. O'Brien and Reymond Nunez had back-to-back singles with two down, but the starter battled back and picked up a strikeout to end the inning. Hanson returned for the fifth and retired the side in order to complete his outing on the mound.
Jordan Guth backed up Hanson and was the first out of the bullpen for the BlueClaws. The opening day starter made his first appearance out of the 'pen and followed up with two scoreless.
Zach Cooper pitched the eighth in scoreless fashion and Geoff Broussard struck out the side and pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance with Lakewood this season.
