Hankins Fires Gem in Series Opener

The SeaWolves came out on the short end of a 2-0 pitchers duel on Thursday night at First Energy Stadium.

Reading got on the board in the bottom of the third against Erie starter Derek Hankins. Roman Quinn led off with a single and stole second. Quinn moved up to third on a KC Serna groundout and scored on a Brock Stassi sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The Fightins added to the lead in the fourth when Cam Perkins led off and connected on a solo home run to left, his second, making it 2-0 for the games final run.

The SeaWolves threatened on Fightins starter Ben Lively in the fifth but could not break through. Dean Green and Wade Gaynor each singled. James Robbins followed and hit into a double play and Connor Harrell grounded out, ending the threat.

The 'Wolves threatened again in the ninth against reliever Steven Shakleford. Jeff McVaney led off with a single and Gaynor singled with two outs, putting the tying run on base. Robbins, however, struck out to end the game.

Hankins (2-4) was the tough luck loser, allowing two runs on five this with a walk and five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Lively (3-0) tossed seven shutout innings, allowing three hits with a walk and five strikeouts in the win.

Wynton Bernard went 0-for-4 in the game, ending his hitting streak at 20 games. He is tied with Ryan Raburn for the longest single season hitting streak in team history.
