New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats defeated the Portland Sea Dogs by the score of the 4-2 at New Britain Stadium on Thursday evening.
CF David Dahl continued to swing his hot bat, hitting his second home run in as many days and scored what ended up being the winning run of the ballgame.
RF Mike Tauchman and SS Trevor Story set a positive tone for the home club, leading off their half of the first with back to back triples off of Sea Dogs starter RHP Mike Augliera. An RBI groundout by LF Tyler Massey and Dahl's solo home run, his third of 2015, gave the Rock Cats an early 3-0 lead.
Portland picked up a run of their own in the top of the second. 3B Oscar Tejeda, who led off the inning with a base hit right up the middle, scored on C Luis Martinez's single to shallow right-center.
Rock Cats starter RHP Gus Schlosser was tagged for the spot start after the Rockies called up Thursday's scheduled starter, LHP Yohan Flande, to the big leagues. Schlosser, who saw time with the Atlanta Braves last season, worked 2 2/3 innings and gave up just the one run on three hits while walking one and striking out three. LHP Jason Gurka improved his record to 3-0 for his 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. RHP Austin House locked down his 13th save of the season in the ninth.
The Sea Dogs made it a 3-2 game after SS Mike Miller scored on a wild pitch from RHP Nelson Gonzalez in the top of the seventh. After the reliever recorded the first two outs, both Miller and 2B Carlos Asuaje singled and with 1B Jantzen Witte at the plate, Gonzalez uncorked a pitch that was wide of C Tom Murphy and allowed Miller to score.
New Britain tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the seventh, stretching their lead to 4-2. After LHP Robby Scott walked Tauchman to load the bases, Story lifted a sacrifice fly to RF Jonathan Roof, deep enough to score 3B Jayson Langfels from third.
Augliera, who was able to settle down after the rocky first, went 6 1/3 innings for the Red Sox's affiliate. The right hander allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out five. He falls to 1-6 in the losing effort.
Friday's contest sees Rock Cats starter RHP Matt Flemer square off against Portland's RHP Mike McCarthy. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
