Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 4, 2014) -The Huntsville Stars (40-20) found their winning track again as they took the series finale with the Generals (25-34) 7-5 in Jackson Wednesday afternoon. Mitch Haniger led the way going 3-for-4 with two home runs as the Stars became the second team in all of minor league to reach 40 wins with the victory.

Huntsville took their first lead in the series since game one on Saturday with a solo homer from Haniger in the second inning. That's all they were able to push across in the inning, but took the early lead 1-0.

Huntsville added to their lead an inning later as Shea Vucinich reached on an error and came around to score on Josh Prince's single. Nick Ramirez tripled to score Prince and scored himself on Jason Rogers's single to make the score 4-0 Stars.

The Generals had a big third inning of their own however. Mike Dowd (1x3, R) was hit by a pitch to lead it off and went to third on Nate Melendres's (1x4, R) bunt single and an error by Huntsville starter Andy Moye. Both runners scored on a double by Jack Marder (2x4, R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB) to cut the lead in half 4-2. After Leon Landry (0x4) sacrificed Marder to third, Jack scored on Dan Paolini's (1x5, R, RBI) single. Dario Pizzano (2x5, R, HR, 2 RBI) then hit a two-run homer. It was Pizzano's second round-tripper in three days and gave Jackson a 5-4 lead.

In the fifth the Stars retook the lead on a three-run shot from Haniger down the left field line. The second long ball of the day for the right fielder just did sneak around the foul pole in left and gave Huntsville a 7-5 lead.

The Generals threatened in the seventh loading the bases with only one out, but Girard, Kan. native Tanner Poppe struck out the side to preserve the lead for the Stars. Jackson ended the day leaving 11 runners on base including seven in the final three innings.

Moye (2-0, 3.24) earned his second victory of the season pitching 5.0 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits. Trevor Miller (4-6, 3.24) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. Southern League All-Star and Huntsville closer David Goforth came out of the pen in the eighth to save his 13th game of the season.

Patrick Kivlehan (2x4, BB) and Kevin Rivers (2x5, 2B) joined Marder and Pizzano with two-hit days, but the Generals finished the game 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Pizzano has two homers and nine RBI's over the last three games.

Jackson travels to Birmingham to begin a five-game series with the Barons on Thursday at Regions Field. Lefty Tyler Olson (1-2, 4.73) is set to make the start for the Generals as Birmingham will send Nick McCully (2-5, 6.18) to the mound. The game will be at 7:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
