Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 3, 2014) - Patrick Kivlehan (3x4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB) doubled three times and scored twice to lead the Generals (25-33) to their first series win since mid-April beating Huntsville (39-20) 9-6 on Tuesday. The series winless streak had reached eight, but the Generals snapped it taking three of the first four against the North Division first-half champions. Jackson has out-scored Huntsville over the last three nights 25-10.
The last series win was April 14-18, taking three of five from the Tennessee Smokies. Jackson has matched a season-high with a three-game win streak.
Jamal Austin (2x4, 2 R) and Manny Pina (2x4, 2 R, RBI, BB) added two-hit games to Kivlehan's three doubles to lead the Jackson offense.
Jackson plated runners in the first inning for the second straight night. Kivlehan hammered a double off the wall in right-center that scored Austin and Dan Paolini (1x4, R, 2 RBI, BB). The hit gave the Generals an early 2-0 lead.
Jason Rogers led off the second inning for Huntsville with a solo home run. The Stars had two more base runners in the inning, but could not score any more and the Jackson lead was cut 2-1.
In the third, with one out and runners on second and third, John Hicks (1x4) hit a grounder to first base and Nick Ramirez airmailed the throw to the plate which allowed Kivlehan and Pina to score to increase the General lead to 4-1.
The Stars cut the lead back to one in the top of the fourth when D'Vontrey Richardson hit a sacrifice fly and Adam Weisenburger had an RBI single to score Mitch Haniger and Shawn Zarraga respectively. The two runs cut the lead to 4-3.
But Jackson picked up those runs back in the next half inning. With two outs, Kivlehan notched his third double of the night. Then Pina picked up his third single in the past two games to score Kivlehan. Pina scored on Dario Pizzano's (1x4, RBI, BB) following double and the score was 6-3 Generals after four innings.
Kentrail Davis led the fifth inning off with a single. He came around to score on an error in center field by Jamal Austin that made the score 6-4 Jackson.
The Generals added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and second Austin bunted beautifully down the third base line. Catcher Weisenburger attempted to throw Austin out at first, but the ball went up the right field line. Jack Marder (1x3, R, BB) scored and Nate Melendres (0x3, R) went to third. Melendres and Austin then scored as the next batter Paolini singled to right field and the lead ballooned to 9-4 in favor of Jackson after the fifth.
A double with one out in the eighth inning led to another run for the Stars. Zarraga doubled and two batters later Weisenburger picked him up with an RBI single and cut the Generals lead to 9-5.
The lead shrunk to 9-6 when Jason Rogers doubled home Kentrail Davis to cut the winning margin to three runs.
Starter Victor Sanchez (1-2, 5.28) labored a bit in the fourth inning and gave up three runs, only two of them earned and struck out five in 4.0 innings of work. Kyle Hunter (1-1, 3.44) came on in relief and picked up the win going 2.2 innings. Hunter gave up one unearned run and one hit before giving way to Richard Vargas (0-1, 6.04) in the seventh. But Vargas could not get through the ninth and All-Star Stephen Kohlscheen (1-1, 5 SV, 1.27) came in to record his sixth save on one pitch.
Jed Bradley lost his Double-A debut as he gave up six runs, four earned and nine hits through 4.0 innings.
Huntsville and Jackson will finish this five-game set Wednesday. The Generals will send Trevor Miller (4-5, 4.08) to the bump and reigning Southern League Pitcher of the Week Andy Moye (1-0, 0.77) will get the ball for the Stars. The game will be at 12:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
