Halmo Receives 10 Game Suspension
March 16, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack is announcing that Captain Michael Halmo has been suspended 10 games by the Ontario Hockey League for his hit on Sarnia Sting forward and 2012 NHL Entry Draft Top Prospect, Nail Yakupov.
The hit in question occurred at the 11:20 mark of the 2nd period last Saturday in Sarnia. Despite receiving a five minute charging penalty from the officials after no initially penalty on the player was called, OHL officials deemed Halmo eligible to play on Sunday against the Plymouth Whalers.
Halmo was suspended indefinitely by the OHL on Wednesday, followed by a conference call with league officials on Thursday and the subsequent suspension being handed down today. The Sarnia Sting is a potential first round playoff opponent for the Attack, however; Halmo will be ineligible to suit up in any of those contests.
The overage Captain had recently signed a three year entry level contract with the New York Islanders and is having his best year on the Ontario Hockey League having compiled 40 goals and 45 assists. The Waterloo native had played 247 Ontario Hockey League regular season games, all in an Attack uniform.
The OHL also confirmed that forward Daniel Zweep will not receive further discipline for his hit in the 2nd period of Sunday afternoon's game in Plymouth.
