Arkansas Travelers News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A two-run homerun in the sixth and another two-run shot in the eighth inning by first baseman Casey Haerther provided Arkansas Traveler starting pitcher Ariel Pena (4-4, 3.01) all the insurance he would need to go the distance as he pitched the Travelers to a series split with a 6-1 win over the Springfield Cardinals Wednesday night at Hammons Field.
Haerther and Pena were not the only ones to have big nights on Wednesday. Travs' (25-39) shortstop Jean Segura was also instrumental in the win as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles. His first-inning double set up the game's first run. After doubling to right field off of the Cardinals' (33-31) starter Trevor Rosenthal (5-6, 3.01), Segura was advanced to third on a groundout by Renny Osuna, and then was moved home on a groundout by Ryan Mount, putting the Travs out in front, 1-0.
Segura's second double of the evening would come in his next at-bat and would also be the spark to a Traveler score. This time, Osuna followed Segura's double with a single to advance Segura to third base. Mount would then fly out to Kyle Conley in left field, but Segura did not tag on the play. After Roberto Lopez beat out the back-half of a potential inning-ending double play, Segura scored the Travs' second run to give them a 2-0 lead.
After allowing just one hit, but facing the minimum through two innings, Pena surrendered the Cardinals' first and only run of the game on a leadoff homerun in the third by Jose Garcia. That homerun would prove to be the lone blemish on Pena's time on the rubber for the Travelers. By the end of the game, Pena would record the Texas League's second nine-inning complete game this season. Allowing Pena to go the distance was the fact that he allowed no more than one hit in an inning, and save for the Garcia homerun, none of the hits came around to score.
With the Travs leading 2-1 in the sixth inning and Lopez on base with his leadoff single, Haerther began to take matters into his own bat as he launched a 2-1 Rosenthal offering out to the power-ally in left-centerfield for his sixth homer of the season.
Haerther's next at-bat would come in the eighth inning and again Lopez was on base, this time via the walk. After seeing just one pitch from Michael Blazek, Haerther disposed of the following pitch near where he left the yard in his previous at-bat for his seventh homer of the season to give the Travs a five-run cushion and a 6-1 lead. It is the first time this season that Haerther has hit two homeruns in a game, and his four-RBI effort is a personal game best this season.
Pena has now won his last three decisions and has an ERA of 1.79 in his last five starts.
The Travs will now return home for an eight-game home stand that will feature four-game series with the Tulsa Drillers and the Springfield Cardinals. The home stand is slated to begin Thursday, June 14th with a scheduled first pitch of 7:10 pm.
