Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS- In a game that lasted a season long 14 innings, and went 4 hours and 47 minutes, Frisco was able to stay alive (and awake), to defeat the Midland RockHounds 5-4 at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Jose Felix had the game-winning RBI single to left off Carlos Hernandez (0-3), which scored Ryan Strausborger from third.
Making his third minor-league tune-up start, in preparation for a big league call-up, Roy Oswalt got an early lead to work with. Facing 'Hounds starter Murphy Smith, Ryan Strausborger reached on a fielder's choice. The next batter Val Majewski wrapped a single to right, to bring home Strausborger from first.
However Midland pulled in front in the top of the third against Oswalt. Dusty Coleman led off the inning with a strikeout, but reached first base after a pitch went to the backstop. Leonardo Gil and Michael Choice added doubles, while Jeremy Barfield added an RBI single to make it 3-1 RockHounds.
Coming back in the top of the fourth, Oswalt would face two batters, but departed after reaching his 85-pitch limit. Over 3.1 innings, the right-hander allowed three runs (all earned), five hits, walked one, and struck out three.
In the bottom of the fourth, the RoughRiders snatched the lead right back, as five hitters in a row added base hits. The runs scored on a Val Majewski RBI single to right, and on a 2-run base knock by Jared Prince.
An RBI single by the 'Hounds Michael Choice tied the game at four apiece going into the top of the seventh, after an error by Jurickson Profar allowed Conner Crumbliss to advance into scoring position. The 'Riders then failed to convert with runners at the corners in the eighth, and were held scoreless in the ninth.
Moving to extra innings, the RoughRiders manufactured the game-winning run in the bottom of the 14th. Ryan Strausborger led-off with a walk, and moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Val Majewski. 'Hounds manager Steve Scarsone intentionally walked Jared Prince to set-up the double-play, but Jose Felix came through with a single to left, allowing Strausborger to score.
Carlos Pimentel (6-2) picked up the win, working two scoreless innings, walking three, and striking out one. Carlos Hernandez drew the loss, allowing one run, on two hits, over 2.1 innings.
The RoughRiders wrap up their four-game series with the RockHounds Wednesday morning. Jake Brigham (3-2, 3.79) starts for Frisco, he will be opposed by Midland right-hander Sonny Gray (1-5, 4.95). First pitch is slated for 11:05, and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM, or on ridersbaseball.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 10:30.
