Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

San Antonio (24-39) @ Corpus Christi (33-30)

Drew Locke's grand slam provided the game's first runs in the bottom of the seventh last night and the Hooks would go on to beat San Antonio 6-1 for Corpus Christi's sixth straight win. The winning streak is the longest for the club since a six-game streak back in July of 2007. Locke's slam was just the second hit given up by Missions' starter Keyvius Sampson, who had his bid for a no-hitter broken up two batters earlier when Jose Martinez singled to left.

Brett Oberholtzer (5-3) earned the win, limiting the Missions to a run on six hits over 7.2 innings while striking out eight. With Frisco's 5-4 win over Midland last night in 14 innings, the Hooks have moved into sole possession of second place in the TL South for the first time since April 28. The Hooks trail the RoughRiders by five games with seven remaining to play in the first half. Corpus Christi's next four games, after tonight, are at Frisco.

Tonight's Matchup:

RHP Andrew Cashner (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Jake Buchanan (3-4, 5.32)

Cashner, obtained by the Padres along with OF Kyung-Min Na in the January 2012 deal that sent IF Anthony Rizzo and RHP Zach Cates to the Cubs, makes the first of three scheduled starts for the Missions here tonight. The hard-throwing right-hander has made 28 appearances and one start for the Padres this season. His most recent outing came this past Saturday at Milwaukee when he allowed one run on two hits and two walks in 2.1 innings in his lone start for San Diego. In this his third season in the big leagues, Cashner is 3-3 with a 3.81 ERA, with 18 walks and 34 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. The Padres plan to have Cashner make two more starts, June 19 and June 25, before returning to San Diego to join the Padres' rotation.

- Has a 2.13 GO/AO ratio with the Padres while holding big-league hitters to a .243 average

- Missed most of last season with a rotator cuff strain in his right shoulder

- Originally a first-round pick (19th overall) of the Cubs in 2008 out of TCU

Buchanan, an eighth-round pick of the Astros in 2010 out of North Carolina State, makes his 13th start this season and his third against the Missions. Last Friday here against Midland, Buchanan carried a shutout into the fifth and notched the first out in that inning before surrendering seven consecutive hits in the frame. He finished the evening with five earned runs allowed on nine hits and a walk in 4.2 innings, taking a no-decision in Corpus Christi's 8-5 win. Even with that fifth-inning outburst, Buchanan is 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA in his last four starts, with 3 walks and 16 strikeouts in 26.0 innings. In 25 starts last season for Lancaster in the California League, Buchanan was 5-10 with a 3.91 ERA. Selected as the Astros 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Buchanan became the first Lancaster pitcher to start a minimum of 20 games and finish the season with an ERA under 4.00 since former Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb accomplished the feat in 2001 (28 starts, 3.99 ERA).

- Has a 2.04 GO/AO ratio after 12 starts

- In 2 starts vs. San Antonio is 0-2 with a 17.18 ERA

- Has issued 2 or fewer walks in 10 of his 12 starts

Six straight

The Hooks enter play tonight with six wins in a row - the longest winning streak for the club since the 2007 season. That begs the question: when's the last time the Hooks won seven straight? For that, you need to go back a little earlier in the 2007 campaign.

The Hooks had two six-game winning streaks in July of that year, but from May 20-31, Dave Clark's club cobbled together 10 consecutive wins. That streak tied the franchise record, which had been established by the 2006 championship squad. Those guys strung together 10 wins from May 8-18 that season.

Slam city

Three's the charm. Drew Locke's grand slam last night was the third slam for the Hooks this season. It was also the third slam for Locke in a Hooks' uniform. Locke hit two slams for the team back in 2009.

Locke now stands alone in second in franchise history with three slams. The only player with more for the Hooks is Mark Saccomanno, who has four. Saccomanno recorded the first slam in team history on June 9, 2005. He returned with three more slams in the 2006 season.

Wates to DL; Muren arrives

Hooks manager Keith Bodie announced today that OF Austin Wates has been placed on the disabled list (left quad). After not playing for five games, Wates started last night but managed to play just two innings and collect one plate appearance (a walk).

Slated to join the club today is OF Drew Muren, up from Lexington of the South Atlantic League. In 48 games this season with the Legends, Muren was batting .279 (51x183) with 12 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HRs, 25 runs and 17 RBIs. He had 4 stolen bases in 9 tries.

A 22nd-round pick of the Astros last June out of Cal State-Northridge, Muren played 67 games last year for Tri-City in the New York-Penn League, where he hit .257-2-21 with 8 steals.

Bullpen working hard

Corpus Christi's bullpen was responsible for an inning-and-a-third of shutout relief last night. That continues a recent trend of excellence for the relief corps - a trend that coincides with the six-game winning streak.

Over the last six games, Hooks' relievers have allowed just 2 earned runs in 17.2 innings for a 1.02 ERA. Opponents have managed just 13 hits in this six-game stretch.

Martinez 11/23

Martinez is batting .354 (17x48) during his current 11-game hitting streak. During the streak he has 3 doubles, 1 HR, 8 runs and 12 RBIs. Martinez has also reached base safely in 23 straight games here at Whataburger Field. His OBP during those 23 games is .426.

His current hitting streak is his second-longest of the year. Martinez hit safely in 12 straight May 15-28.
