Norfolk Tides News Release

Gwinnett rallied with four runs in the ninth inning to topple the Tides 5-4 Thursday night.

With Norfolk leading 4-1, the Braves sent 10 men to the plate in the final frame to send the Tides to their second loss this season when leading after eight innings. Brandon Jones and Reid Gorecki started the comeback with run-scoring hits off of Bob McCrory (0-1), who yielded three hits and a walk while recording just one out. Jim Miller was summoned from the bullpen to face Brian Barton, who knotted the game with a single to center field that scored pinch-runner Antonio Perez. Wes Timmons then put Gwinnett on top with a double down the first base line that glanced off of Brandon Snyder's glove, giving the Braves a 5-4 lead.

Gwinnett closer Luis Valdez worked around a two-out single by Joey Gathright in the bottom of the ninth to register his 14th save of the season.

Gwinnett's comeback denied Tides starter Jake Arrieta the win, as the 23-year-old right-hander allowed one run on five hits in seven innings of work. Arrieta walked two as he matched his season-high for innings pitched in a game, throwing 64 of his 101 pitches for strikes.

Justin Christian paced Norfolk's offense with three singles and two runs scored, while Michael Aubrey added a pair of RBI singles.

The Tides and Braves will square off again on Friday night, with first pitch at Harbor Park scheduled for 6:15. Chris Tillman (5-5, 2.97) will take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander Tony Armas (1-1, 4.11).
