Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats swept the Indianapolis Indians 2-1 and 3-2 tonight in a double-header in front of 10,768 fans at Louisville Slugger Field. Drew Stubbs went a combined 3-4 with a HBP and three stolen bases tonight to push his season total to 31.
Ramon Ramirez (3-5, 4.50) came into the game having thrown six quality starts out of his last nine games. Tonight was no different as the right-hander mastered the Indians to pick up his third victory of the season. He lasted six and one-third innings, surrendering one run on six hits and four strikeouts.
The Bats jumped ahead early in game one. Drew Stubbs led the game off with a single to left but was picked off of first base during Edwin Encarnacion's at-bat. Chris Heisey then drew a walk and was knocked home by Kevin Barker's RBI-double to give the Bats a 1-0 lead.
The lead was pushed to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Danny Dorn smacked a double to left-center field to start the inning. Chris Valaika followed with a base hit to left, driving in Dorn. Craig Tatum kept the threat alive with a single of his own but the Bats were unable to do further damage.
Indianapolis was able to cut the lead to one in the top half of the seventh inning on Larry Broadway's fifth home run of the season.
Picking up the loss for the Indians was starter Eric Hacker (2-2, 4.55). He went four and one-third innings giving up two runs on six hits, while walking two, and striking out three.
Pedro Viola worked a perfect two-thirds of an inning to pick up his fifth save of the season in six chances.
In game two of the double-header it was the Indians who got on the board first in the top of the second. Miguel Perez singled and Chris Snelling walked with one out. Brian Bixler then ripped a double to left, scoring Perez. Snelling attempted to score on the play but was gunned down at the plate by the relay of Stubbs to Adam Rosales to Corky Miller.
Rosales doubled to start the bottom of the second. After moving to third on a ground out to the right side, Rosales was able to score on Valaika's sacrifice fly to center. Valaika finished the night 2-4 with two walks and three RBI's.
Louisville put a run on the board in the bottom of the third on Encarnacion's RBI-single and Indianapolis would knot the game at two in the fourth on Broadway's second home run of the night. Broadway finished 2-5 with two home runs.
The Bats pulled ahead for good in their half of the fourth. Rosales got things started with a single and Valaika picked up his third RBI of the game with a double to deep right field, making the score 3-2..
The win was picked up by Jeff Kennard (2-1, 3.48); who relieved starter Adam Pettyjohn in the fifth inning. Pettyjohn lasted only four innings, an inning shy of the required five. Robert Manuel worked the seventh to notch his seventh save in eight chances.
Indians' starter Jeremy Powell (4-4, 4.31) was tagged with the loss, going four and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs.
The final game of the short homestand between the Bats and Indians is tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Getting the ball for Louisville is Ben Jukich (4-4, 5.86) and Tom Gorzelanny (3-1, 3.29) is set to be on the mound for Indianapolis. Fourth of July fireworks will follow the game.
