Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The International League today announced the members of its 2009 All-Star team, with SS Brent Dlugach being the Mud Hens lone representative. The squad of 28 IL standouts will take on the Pacific Coast League's best in the 22nd annual Triple-A All-Star Game, slated for Wednesday, July 15 in Portland, Oregon. First pitch is set for 7:05 pacific daylight time and can be seen live on ESPN2 and heard locally on Fox Sports Radio 1230 AM.
The 2009 International League All-Star squad is made up of 13 elected players who have received the most votes from ballots submitted by clubs' field managers and general managers (1/3), members of the media (1/3), and online fan voting (1/3). The elected players are joined by 15 additional All-Stars selected by the International League office. Each of the IL's 14 clubs will be represented in Portland.
Dlugach was selected by Detroit in the sixth round of the 2004 draft and is seeing his first extensive Triple-A action after missing most of 2008 recovering from right shoulder surgery. Dlugach is batting .286 with 9 HR and 39 RBI this season, including a current 14-game hit streak that has seen him go 19-55 (.345) with 3 HR (9 total extra-base hits) and 11 RBI.
Of all the International League's shortstops, Dlugach is second in batting average and on-base percentage (behind Durham's Reid Brignac, who will start the All-Star Game), first in home runs and second in RBI (behind Rochester's Trevor Plouffe).
Five clubs lead the way with three representatives on the Team. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, owners of the League's best record at 44-32, are sending three All-Stars to Portland, as are the Columbus Clippers, Gwinnett Braves, Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Syracuse Chiefs.
Three former Mud Hens will be representing the Pacific Coast League in Portland. DH Chris Shelton (.319, 12 HR, 61 RBI for Tacoma) and RHP Yorman Bazardo (7-2, 2.79 ERA, 87 IP for Round Rock) were both elected to the squad, while C Eric Munson (.271, 6 HR, 38 RBI for Sacramento) was selected.
The International League looks to rebound from a disappointing 6-5 loss in the 2008 Triple-A All-Star Game, which broke a two-year winning streak over the Pacific Coast League. The PCL now owns a 6-5 advantage in the 11 years since the Game changed to the current IL vs. PCL format. The winning League this season will once again earn the right to have its champion play as the "home team" at the Bricktown Showdown Triple-A Championship Game in Oklahoma City this September.
