Gurney a Standout in Preseason Win
September 1, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Justyn Gurney buried two goals, scored the game winner, and added an assist while Keegan Karki turned in 26 saves to lift the Everett Silvertips to a 5-3 win over the Spokane Chiefs to conclude the second day of the Delta Hotels Preseason Classic on Saturday in downtown Everett.
Improving to a 2-0 record in preseason play, Michal Gut scored for the second time in as many games while Jack Lambert earned his first preseason goal and Max Patterson broke a 2-2 tie in the third period. Spokane fell to 0-2 in the preseason despite a two goal effort by Adam Beckman and three power play goals.
Gut - like Friday night - put the Tips up 1-0 at 12:59 of the first period when he slammed in a rebound from the left circle. Bear Hughes stashed a rebound while in a scrum at the crease at 3:33 of the second period, but the Silvertips responded when Jack Lambert - on the same ice he played on last season as a member of the Jr. Silvertips program - buried a backhander off an outnumbered attack for a 2-1 lead at 6:46.
Adam Beckman sniped his first preseason goal to tie the game, 2-2 at 16:46 when he finished Eli Zummack's centering pass to the slot.
Patterson broke the tie in the third period on a magnificent goal off the rush. Seattle native Brendan Lee generated speed on the attack and from the left wing floated a pass into the slot, tape-to-tape for Patterson. The incoming overager deked to the forehand and tucked his first preseason goal, glove side on Campbell Arnold at 6:11.
Gurney put the Tips up by two goals when he finished Reece Vitelli's pass at the net with 8:25 left in regulation, but after Spokane pulled Arnold for a sixth attacker, Beckman rifled his second goal of the game with 2:30 left to draw the Chiefs within a goal.
After a scare off the right post, the Silvertips relayed the puck of the zone, and Bryce Kindopp found Gurney at the crease for an empty netter with 51 seconds left.
NOTES: The Silvertips scratched Martin Fasko-Rudas (injury), Carter Halamandaris, Nate Goodbrandson, Conrad Mitchell, Dylan Anderson, Wyatte Wylie (Philadelphia Flyers camp), and Dustin Wolf ... four Silvertips registered multi point games ... Fairbrother finished with a +4 rating on the blueline.
The Silvertips return to play for pre-season action tomorrow, 7:00 p.m. against the Seattle Thunderbirds to finish the Delta Hotels Preseason Classic.
