San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have named Dennis Purdie as the team captain for the 2002-03 season, the West Coast Hockey League club announced today. Jamie Black and Samy Nasreddine will remain as the two alternate captains.
Purdie, 29, begins his fourth season with the Blue and Orange. He and Black are the two most tenured Gulls. Purdie came into this season ranking 17th on the Gulls' all-time scoring list with 121 points (70g, 51a). The 5-foot-10-inch, 190-pound native of Amherstburg, Ontario is a 10-year pro veteran. Purdie has scored at least 20 goals in seven of those seasons, and all three with the Gulls. He also captained the East Coast Hockey League's Toledo Storm in 1995-96 and 1996-97.
Black, 30, is also entering his fourth season in San Diego. He came into this season ranking 19th on the Gulls' all-time scoring list with 115 points (37g, 78a). The 6-foot, 205-pound native of Calgary, Alberta comes into this season having played in 173 consecutive games, dating back to 1999-00. Black has only missed six games in the last five years. This will be his third straight season as San Diego's alternate captain.
Nasreddine, 26, begins his third season with the Gulls. Last season, he ranked second in the WCHL with a +27. The 6-foot-3-inch, 205-pound native of Montreal has been one of San Diego's most reliable defensemen since he joined the squad in 2000-01. This will be his second straight season as a Gulls alternate captain.
San Diego opens the regular season Saturday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs at the Sports Arena. Gulls caps, presented by Pro Specialties Group, will be given out to the first 10,000 fans. Magnetic schedules, courtesy of Holiday Inn Select, will be given to the first 5,000 fans. ZooperStars! will provide the intermission entertainment. It will also be KGB Night.
