Grubauer Named Reebok Hockey ECHL Rookie of the Month

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, announced today that goaltender Philipp Grubauer has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Rookie of the Month for January.

Grubauer, 20, went 7-1-0 with one shutout, a 1.66 goals-against average and a save percentage of .935 in nine appearances during the month, helping the Stingrays to an 11-2-0 mark in January.

The Rosenheim, Germany, native began the month with six consecutive wins, making at least 27 saves in four of the six contests. He allowed two goals or less in six of his eight starts in January and in 18 of his 28 appearances over this season. Grubauer is tied for second in the league with 17 wins, is third with a 2.14 goals-against average and fifth with a .922 save percentage.

The 6-foot-1, 186-pound goaltender was named the ECHL Goaltender of the Month in November after going 6-1-1 with one shutout, a 1.73 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage in eight appearances during the month.

A fourth-round selection (112th overall) by the Washington Capitals in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Grubauer spent the three previous seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, compiling a record of 52-36-10 in 105 games with Belleville, Windsor, and Kingston.

The Stingrays battle the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday, February 3 at 7:35 p.m. at U.S. Bank Arena and return to the North Charleston Coliseum Tuesday, February 7 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday is 2-for-1 Ticket Night!
