February 2, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Chicago Express News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Chicago Express, proud member of the ECHL and proud affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, saw the first hat trick in team history as LW Devin DiDiomete tallied three times and added an assist to lift the Express to a 6-3 win at the Sun National Bank Center on Thursday Night.
After the Express killed off 1:42 of 5-on-3 action in the game's opening period, RW Tyler Donati put the Express on top early on. DiDiomete raced in from the right win, and snapped a pass to a wide open Donati in the slot. Donati fired a one-timer before Trenton G Dave Caruso could get set, putting Chicago up 1-0. DiDiomete increased the lead to 2-0 at 15:00, when he found a blocked shot in front of the net and fired a wrister into the lower right corner. Chicago held the 2-0 lead through the remainder of the period, and outshot the Titans 10-7 in the opening frame.
The Express started the second period right where they left off in the first. Just under three minutes into the frame, F Kyle Ostrow knocked down a pass from D Brett Motherwell in the crease, and tapped it home as the Express took a 3-0 lead. They stretched it 4-0 at 9:52, when Donati picked off a pass at the Chicago blue down, led a 2-on-1 rush up the ice, and found DiDiomete for his second goal of the game, stretching the Chicago lead to 4-0. Trenton struck back however, as D Ray DiLauro scored on the power play at 12:56 and F Rob Bordson added a marker at 14:32 to cut the Chicago lead to 4-2. DiDiomete then made Express history, banging home a rebound with 1:42 left in the second period as the Express held a 5-2 lead after two.
D Scott Wietecha regained the four goal lead for the Express in the final frame, as Donati fed him a perfect pass in the top of the slot, and Wietecha hammered a slap shot past Caruso 5:41 into the third, restoring the four goal lead. It was Donati's fourth assist and fifth point of the game. Trenton added on final marking with :36 seconds left in the game as wrist shot from D Tyler Hostetter found its way to the back of the net, for the final 6-3 score.
