Grizzlies win wild one

August 12, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Gateway Grizzlies inched ever closer to playoff contention Friday night, winning a slugfest at GMC Stadium 12-9 over the Rockford RiverHawks.

Rockford (38-34) came into the game tied for first place in Frontier League West Division but now trail first place Kalamazoo by a game. The Grizzlies (35-37) remain just four games out of first place and three games out of a playoff spot.

The Grizzlies used an eight-run sixth inning to overcome a five-run deficit. Ben Margalski capped the inning with a grand slam to right. Margalski was 3-5 with the four RBIs. Phil Warren was 3-4 with three RBIs including a two-run home run. Thomari Story-Harden, acquired in a trade earlier in the day, picked up a pair of RBIs. Mike Breyman was 3-4 with an RBI.

Brandon Smith (10-3) earned the win for the Grizzlies despite a rough outing. Smith went five innings allowing eight runs, seven earned on six hits. He walked three and struck out six. Scott Patterson pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his second consecutive save and his fifth of the year. He struck out one. The strikeout, his 316th as a Grizzlie, tied him with Pete Buck for the most career strikeouts.

The Grizzlies and the RiverHawks will meet in game two of the three game series Saturday night at GMC Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
