Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Matt Powell (3-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on three hits as the Gateway Grizzlies (27-33) took down the Florence Freedom (36-25) Saturday night in Florence, KY. The final score was 2-1.
Powell was forced into the extended role after Freedom secondbaseman Wally Quigg lined a base hit off of starter Nathan Roush's left knee in the first inning. Roush could not continue and Powell came in. Powell allowed a single run on three hits on the night. The only run he allowed, came on a wild pitch with two outs in the seventh. Scott Patterson followed, throwing two perfect innings for his first save of the year. He struck out the side, in order, in the ninth.
The Grizzlies scored both of their runs in the eighth inning. Trailing 1-0, Freddy Lopez bunted his way on to lead off the inning. He was moved to second on a sac bunt by Brandon Averill. With two outs, Smarsh singled to send Lopez to third and he came in on a wild pitch from Freedom starter Mike Dennison. The next hitter, Mike Breyman, doubled into the right field corner to score Smarsh and give the Grizzlies the lead.
Breyman was 1-4 with the RBI. Lopez and Smarsh were each 1-3. Gary Gilbert was 1-4.
The Grizzlies and the Freedom continue the series with a 5:05 central time game Sunday night in Florence.
