Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Gateway Grizzlies capitalized on four Richmond errors Saturday night as they defeat the Roosters 6-4 in the opener of a three-game series. With the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Jimmy Reiter lined a pitch through the middle, scoring two runs and putting the Grizzlies up for good. The win is the Grizzlies third in a row, marking the first time the team has won three in a row the entire season.

The Grizzlies and Roosters are both 18-25 for the season.

The Grizzlies jumped out on top early, leading 2-0 after ½ inning. They led 3-2 before Richmond scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third. That made it 4-3 Richmond. It stayed that way until the top of the eighth inning.

In the eighth, the Grizzlies put two on. Phil Warren led off and reached on an error before Mike Breyman was walked. Freddy Lopez came to plate with the intention of sacrificing the runners over. Lopez put down a perfect bunt and was able to reach, loading the bases with nobody out. The Roosters turned the ball over to reliever Beau Massey, who struck out Gary Gilbert. Ryan Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game, bring Reiter to the plate.

Erik Dessau (2-1) got the win going seven innings. He allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits. He struck out five. Matt Powell pitched the final two innings, without allowing a hit to earn his second save in as many nights.

Reiter was 1-5 with the two RBIs. Warren was 1-5 with an RBI. Shawn Smarsh was 1-4 with an RBI. Mike Breyman was 2-3.

The Grizzlies and Roosters continue the series with a 4:35 game Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Ind. Fans can tune in beginning at 4:20 on 1490 WESL and the Grizzlies radio network.
