Simpson pitches Otters to win

Andre Simpson threw eight innings of three run baseball and Brian McKenna hit his eighth homer leading the Otters to a 4-3 win over the River City Rascals.

With the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the second, Scott Ward singled with one out. After John Coker (Otters debut) grounded out, Trask Munoz walked. Down in the count 0-2, McKenna drilled a fastball over the left field fence for his team leading eighth homer and a 3-0 Evansville lead.

River City wasted no time in coming back as they scored two in the third on a double by Jon Williams and a bunt single by Kirk McConnell. Williams struck again in the fourth, singling home Mikela Olsen to tie the game at 3-3.

The Otters took the lead for good in the fifth. After Frank Scott led of with a single, Denver Stuckey sacrificed him to second. Steve Martin then lined a ball sharply into left. Initially, Scott was held at third, but the ball was bobbled by McConnell allowing Scott to score and putting the Otters up 4-3.

Simpson (3-4) carried the Otters for the rest of the game as he scattered four hits, allowing three runs (two earned), striking out seven in the victory. Nathan Stone came in for Evansville in the ninth and sent the Rascals away in order, picking up his third save. Brian Keating (1-4) took the loss for River City.

Evansville will try for their fourth win in five games as they take on River City again on Sunday night with the game starting at 6:05 p.m.
