Grizzlies Win 4-3 in Overtime

Utah Grizzlies vs. the Wichita Thunder

Wichita, Kansas - Caleb Herbert scored twice on the power play, with the second coming in overtime to give the Utah Grizzlies a 4-3 overtime win over the Wichita Thunder on Sunday afternoon at Intrust Bank Arena.
The Grizzlies outshot the Thunder 45 to 24 in the game and outshot them 4 to 1 in overtime.
Wichita led 1-0 after 1 period of play as Pierre-Cedric Labrie scored his 3rd goal of the season.
Herbert got the Grizzlies on the board on the power play with his 9th goal of the season 1:59 into the second period. Wichita got a goal from Hayden Hodgson 16:56 into the period to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead.
Taylor Richart scored to tie the game at 2-2 with 13:55 remaining in regulation. Richart now has a goal in back to back games for Utah. Richart had 17 goals last season. Wichita scored 56 seconds later as former Grizzlies forward Ralph Cuddemi gave Wichita a 3-2 lead.
Utah got on the power play on a Cuddemi hooking minor with 3 minutes remaining. The Grizzlies pulled goaltender Joe Cannata for an extra skater and with 1:20 left, Tim McGauley scored from out near the blue line to tie up the game at 3-3. It was McGauley's third goal of the season.
The Grizzlies went to overtime for the second straight day. Utah drew a penalty as Taylor Richart was tripped up by John McFarland 34 seconds into overtime. The Grizzlies won the ensuing face-off and with patient puck movement Cole Ully found Herbert for the game winner. It was Herbert's second goal of the game and 10th of the season.
It was the first overtime win for Utah, who was 0-3 previously in the extra period.
A big factor in the Grizzlies win was special teams. Coming into the game, Wichita's penalty kill was a perfect 29 for 29. The Grizzlies went 3 for 6 on the man advantage as Taylor Richart scored the lone Grizzlies goal in a 5 on 5 situation. Wichita went 0 for 3 on the power play.
The second game of the three game series is Wednesday morning in Wichita. 9:30 AM mountain time, 10:30 AM local time in Wichita. The Grizzlies now have standings points in 8 of their first 9 games.
Grizzlies notes: Joe Cannata went 21 of 24 on save opportunities for the Grizzlies in the win. Wichita's goaltender Dylan Wells stopped 41 of 45 shots. Jake Marchment and Cole Ully each had 2 assists in the win. Ully now leads the team with 10 assists on the year. Teigan Zahn was wearing the Captain "C" on his sweater for the first time this season. Zahn, along with Taylor Richart and Ryan Walters had all been wearing the Alternate captain "A" on their sweaters. Richart and Walters were wearing the "A" on their sweaters for Sunday's game. Time of game: 2:25. Attendance was 4,961.
