Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL-Chad Rothford drove in three runs Friday night, including the game-winner in the 10th inning as the Gateway Grizzlies defeated the Rockford RiverHawks 6-5 at GCS Ballpark. The Grizzlies have now won two in a row and three of their last four games.
Rothford came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Rothford hit the first pitch he saw from Rockford closer John Muller. The ball spun and bounced to third baseman Aaron Cone, who misplayed it, allowing Stephen Holdren to score the winning run. Holdren was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
The Grizzlies (10-16) took an early lead Friday night, scoring twice in the first inning on Holdren's seventh home run of the year. Rockford (11-16) came back with four runs in the top of the second against Grizzlies' rookie starter Collin Brennan. Alex Kerins made it 4-3 with an RBI double in the home half of the second inning. Jason James pushed the Rockford lead back to two runs with a lead off home run in the third. Rothford evened the score again with a two-run homer, his sixth of the year, in the bottom of the fourth.
Brennan, making his professional debut, went five innings for the Grizzlies. He gave up five runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
Rockford had a chance to take a lead in the top half of the 10th against Grizzlies reliever John Maschino. James led off the inning with a single, before Ross McCoy walked. Aaron Cone laid down a sacrifice bunt that Charlie Lisk fielded and threw to third, too late to get James. Maschino then struck out the next three hitters in order as Rockford left the bases loaded.
Rothford finished the night 2-4 with three RBIs. Holdren was 1-3 with the homer and two RBIs.
The Grizzlies will go for the sweep Saturday night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is 7:05 pm.
