Grizzlies Team With Strikeouts For Troops To Honor Armed Forces
May 18, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA- In honor of National Armed Forces Day, the Fresno Grizzlies will host Military Appreciation Night this Saturday, May 19th at Chukchansi Park, presented by the 144th Fighter Wing and KMJ 580. To show appreciation for the men and women of our Nation's armed forces, the Grizzlies are offering free tickets to any active or retired military personnel, with valid identification.
The Grizzlies will be teaming up with 'Strikeouts for Troops', a national fundraising foundation founded by San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito, to raise money for war wounded troops. On hand for the evening will be Stephanie Browning, an Army Specialist who was severely injured by a roadside bomb while serving in Baghdad. Specialist Browning received a grant from 'Strikeouts for Troops', easing the financial burden of her recovery and allowing her mother to travel to visit her in the hospital.
Like the 35 Major and Minor leaguers who have pledged money to 'Strikeouts for Troops' for each strikeout, homerun, or RBI they tally, the Grizzlies Community Fund will donate $100 for every Grizzlies strikeout recorded on Saturday night to further the cause of Zito's foundation in helping national heroes like Specialist Browning.
On the field, Grizzlies players will wear camouflage themed jerseys in tribute to our Nation's service men and women around the world. Following the game, the jerseys will be up for grabs in a live auction with proceeds benefiting 'Strikeouts for Troops.' An autographed Barry Zito jersey will also be a part of the live auction festivities.
The first 2,500 fans at Saturday's contest against Salt Lake will receive a free Grizzlies camouflage hat, courtesy of KMJ 580. Fresno's Air National Guard unit, the 144th Fighter Wing will provide a pregame flyover.
