Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE - The Albuquerque Isotopes jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on Friday evening and held on to post a 6-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds in front of 9,874 fans at Greer Stadium.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Nashville (21-20).
Former Sounds slugger Chad Hermansen put Albuquerque on the board in the top of the third inning with a two-out, two-run home run to left off Nashville starter Zach Jackson. The blast, which scored Robert Andino and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead, was Hermansen's fifth of the year and his first against the club with which he logged 468 games played from 1998-2002.
The Isotopes increased the lead to 4-0 against Jackson in the fourth. Scott Seabol drew an inning-opening walk then scored a batter later on Brett Carroll's RBI triple to left-center. Carroll later came home on a Chris Ashby groundout.
Nashville pulled within 4-3 in the sixth with three runs against Isotopes reliever Ben Julianel. Drew Anderson, who recorded a season-best three hits on the evening, started the frame with a single, moved to third on an Ozzie Chavez bunt single, and scored on pinch-hitter Joe Dillon's sacrifice fly to put the Sounds on the board. After Callix Crabbe walked, Chris Barnwell floated a two-run double to left-center to make it a one-run contest.
Albuquerque got a run back in the top of the seventh when Eric Reed scored on a Val Pascucci groundout, increasing the advantage to 5-3.
The Sounds rallied again to pull within a run in the home half of the seventh as Brad Nelson led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Vinny Rottino groundout.
Isotopes reliever Nate Field stifled an eighth-inning Sounds rally after Charles Thomas led off with a pinch-hit double to right and was sacrificed to third. The right-hander struck out Barnwell and induced an inning-ending lineout from Laynce Nix to keep Nashville at bay.
Albuquerque plated an insurance run against Steve Bray in the eighth, extending the lead to 6-4 on Carroll's two-out RBI single to center.
Isotopes starter Jeff Fulchino (3-0) worked five scoreless innings to earn the victory. He allowed six hits, walked three batters, and struck out two.
Field worked the final two innings in scoreless fashion to notch his fourth save of the year.
Jackson (5-3) lasted only four innings for Nashville and took the loss after throwing 84 pitches and allowing four runs on six hits while walking four batters and striking out three on the evening.
Left-hander Joe Thatcher made his career Triple-A debut for Nashville and worked a scoreless two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout.
The clubs combined to leave 21 runners on base in the contest, finishing 3-for-27 with runners in scoring position between them. The Sounds left a season-high 11 runners on the basepaths.
The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Jose Capellan (3-2, 3.18) will make his first non-rehab start since the middle of the 2005 season when he toes the rubber for Nashville. Albuquerque will counter with right-hander Ricardo Rodriguez (1-3, 8.02).
