Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds continued their losing ways Friday night, stranding eleven runners on base, including six in scoring position, in a 7-1 loss to Round Rock.

Round Rock jumped out to an early lead after Chris Burke's leadoff homerun in the top of the first inning off Memphis starter Troy Cate. The Express would add a second run after Brooks Conrad stole second and third base on catcher Eli Marrero before scoring on an RBI-single by Eric Munson. Munson added a solo homer of his own in the third inning, finishing the game with four hits and three RBI. Pinch-hitter Tim Raines, Jr. provided the final punch with a three-run home run in the eighth inning.

Cate struggled out of the gate, surrendering the leadoff homer and walking two more to load the bases in the first inning before getting a strikeout and flyout to end the threat. Cate left the game in the top of the fifth after throwing 93 pitches, but the ‘Birds bullpen did not fare much better. Matt Ginter provided two innings of scoreless relief, but right-hander Hugo Castellanos left in the eighth inning with two runners on before lefty Ryan Meaux gave up the homer to Raines.

Marrero made his Memphis debut tonight after beginning the season on the disabled list, finishing the game with two singles. Travis Hanson was the lone bright spot for the ‘Birds, going 3-for-4, and Edgar Gonzalez added two doubles of his own. The top four batters in the Memphis lineup combined to finish 2-for-13.

The ‘Birds will try to pick up a win Saturday night when they send right-hander Mike Smith to counter lefty Mark McLemore. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
