Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Tony Abreu had four hits, and Sergio Garcia added a double and a home run to lead the Las Vegas 51s to a 6-1 victory over the Portland Beavers before 4,039 Friday night at PGE Park.
Eric Stults (3-4) fanned seven and allowed one run and five hits in six innings for the win.
Delwyn Young had a double and two RBIs for the 51s (19-21), who are up 2-0 in the current four-game series.
Mike Thompson lost for the fourth time in as many starts. In his four innings, Thompson (0-4) was charged with five runs, but only two were earned as the Beavers matched a season high with four errors. The Beavers (18-22) have committed at least one error in seven straight games and have 17 in that span.
Matt Kemp reached on an error and scored with two outs in the first thanks to Young's RBI single.
Garcia, who scored twice, smacked a solo homer and Abreu added a triple that plated Luis Maza in the second.
Two more Portland errors opened the door for two runs in the fourth as Las Vegas padded its lead to 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Portland loaded the bases on consecutive no-out singles from Pete Laforest, Paul McAnulty and Royce Huffman but could only manage one run on a sac fly by Michael Johnson.
The teams meet again at PGE Park Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
NOTES: Padres pitcher Clay Hensley will make a major league rehab start for the Beavers on Sunday ... Vincent Sinisi singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
