Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - Grizzlies reliever turned starter Chris Enourato turned in a masterful performance Sunday night in Sauget, pitching eight shutout innings and helping Gateway down the Miners 2-0 at GCS Ballpark.
Enourato's (3-2) near spotless ledger included only three hits, two walks, and a strikeout as he claimed his third win of the year.
"It was a full team effort tonight," commented the 24-year-old righty. "I only struck one guy out, and there were no Miners runs on the board. That is a result of some great defense. It was a blast out there and this group is really coming together."
Grizzlies (21-20) closer Richard Barrett sealed the 2-0 affair in the ninth inning, retiring the final three Southern Illinois (24-17) batters en route to his eighth save of 2012.
The Gateway staff received help in the second frame by way of a two RBI single driven in by Landon Hernandez. Newly acquired DH Rogelio Noris also turned in a solid performance at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with a run scored. Grizzlies leadoff bat and second baseman Jonathan Johnson rounded out the night's offensive notables, hitting 2-for-3 and reaching base safely for the 40th consecutive game.
Déjàvu struck Miner's starter Brian Fowler (3-3), as he suffered a similar losing result as Monday's 6-1 final. Gateway again shelled the lefty with nine hits in his six frames of labor.
Gateway returns to GCS Ballpark Monday night at 7:05 PM for game three of the series against the Southern Illinois Miners. The Grizzlies are winners of five of their last six contests and have won three straight. They will try for the series sweep.
