Miners Shutout in Gateway

Sauget, Il - The Southern Illinois Miners were shutout for the first time this season as Gateway defeated the Miners 2-0. Miners starter Brian Fowler pitched six innings only giving up two runs. He gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out two batters.

The Grizzlies scored the only runs in the game with one out in the bottom of the second inning off Miners starter Brian Fowler. Grizzlies catcher Landon Hernandez hit a two run single to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. The Grizzlies then loaded the bases with two outs but Fowler retired Grizzlies short stop Richie Jimenez Jr with a fly out to right field to end the inning.

The Miners had a chance to score in the top of the third inning with runners on second and third with two outs. However, Jake Kaase grounded out to short stop to end the top of the third inning. Grizzlies starter Chris Enourato threw eight innings, his longest start of the season, only giving up three hits. He walked two batters and only struck out one batter to earn his third win of the season. The Grizzlies defeated the Miners 2-0.

Miners starter Brian Fowler falls to 3-3 on the season with the loss. David Whigham threw two innings in relief and only gave up one hit. He also struck out a batter and walked a batter. The Miners fall to 24-17 on the season, four games behind Traverse City in the Eastern Division.

The Miners and Grizzlies will wrap up the three game set tomorrow night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
