Grizzlies score early, take series from Florence

The Gateway Grizzlies scored nine runs in the first three innings Saturday night and coasted to a 9-4 win over the Florence Freedom in front of 4,966 at GMC Stadium.

The Grizzlies are 37-40. The Freedom are 43-37.

With a River City loss, the Grizzlies would take over third place in the Frontier League West.

Shawn Smarsh set the tone early. On the first pitch he saw from Florence starter Jason Bowlin he drove a pitch over the left-center wall for a 1-0 Grizzlies lead. Phil Warren doubled later in the inning to make it 3-0 after one inning. Gary Gilbert added a second inning grand slam to make it 7-1. Ryan Sullivan hit a two-run shot in the third to make it 9-1. Florence got a home run from Scott Martin and two from Darin Kinsolving for their runs.

Smarsh was 1-3 with the home run. Warren was 2-4 with the pair of RBIs. Gilber was 1-3 with the four runs drive in. Sullivan was 2-4.

Alex Justus (2-1) got the win for the Grizzlies. Justus went 5 2/3 innings. He gave up five runs on nine hits. He struck out two. Chris Little, Ryan Hamilton and Scott Patterson each appeared during the game.

The Grizzlies will go for the sweep Sunday night at GMC Stadium. Game time is 6:05 p.m.
