
Kings pull away from Roosters

Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters lost 11-7 to the Kalamazoo Kings Friday night. It was the eighth straight defeat for Richmond. Both teams scored early but only the Kings continued to put runs on the board throughout the game as they went on to break a four-game losing streak of their own.
The Kings didn't waste time, scoring three runs in the first on two hits and two errors with four stolen bases. Pete Pirman had a two-run single to get Kalamazoo on the board. The Roosters matched it with three run in the bottom half of the inning. Gerald Miller hit a leadoff homer to right-center and Mike Bidwell added a sacrifice fly to left that scored Mike Reese to tie it at 3-3. Kalamazoo continued to score after the first getting one in the second, one in the third, and three more in the fourth. Darryl Blaze, Trevor Brown and Pete Pirman each had homers to aid the Kings' offense.
Richmond scored made it close by getting one run in the third and three in the fourth. Mike Bidwell singled in his second RBI of the night, Kiley Vaughn doubled in two runs and Mike Reese doubled in another to get the Roosters to within a run at 8-7. The Kings got insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, however, to send Richmond to the loss. Pete Pirman went 3-for-3 in the game, was on base five times, had four RBI and tied a Frontier League record with five stolen bases. Jeff Garner (6-4) got the win for Kalamazoo while Dan Caldwell (1-4) took the loss.
The second game between Richmond and Kalamazoo will start on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. (Indiana time). Mike Cervera (1-1, 5.47 ERA) will get the start for Richmond and be opposed by Dane DeValk (0-1, 3.52 ERA).
