Grizzlies Pick up Exhibition Win Behind Strong Pitching

MARION, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies scored two runs on three hits in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Southern Illinois Miners 4-1 Thursday afternoon in an exhibition contest at Rent One Park. Gateway improved to 1-1 in the exhibition season.

Nick Popescu and Richie Jimenez led off the sixth with singles before Sam Mahoney drove in Popescu from third on a groundout. Case Rigby brought home Jimenez on an RBI single later in the inning.

Southern Illinois committed four errors in the game, two of which allowed the Grizzlies to score single runs in the second and eighth innings.

Alex Kaminsky got the start for the Grizzlies and tossed three scoreless innings. The Grizzlies bullpen surrendered just one run over the final six innings. Kolby Moore, Phillip Reamy and Maurice Bankston all worked scoreless innings while Chris Enourato hurled two scoreless innings. Jonathan Gonzalez gave up the only Miners run in his lone inning.

Gateway returns to action with another exhibition road game on Friday afternoon. The Grizzlies take on the River City Rascals at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05.
