Slammers Jump over Boomers in Exhibition Opener

(Schaumburg, IL) - Old and new players alike played big roles in the Joliet Slammers' 14-6 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers in Thursday's exhibition game.
Returnees Sean Estand and David Fox recorded multiple hits while Fox, Erik Lis and Kris Kasarjian drove in multiple runs. Meanwhile among the newcomers, Lockport native Trevor Willis and former Angels farmhand Abel Nieves each drove home two.
On the mound, returnee Jeremy Tietze started the game and threw three shutout innings to earn the win. Chuck Lukanen finished the game off in the ninth with a scoreless frame.
In-between it was newcomers Steven Maxwell (three innings, two runs), Chris Sobota and Joliet native Seth Hobbs holding down the fort for Joliet.
The Slammers jumped on Schaumburg starter Tyler Watkins in the third. Fox reached on an error to start the frame and one out later Estand singled him to second. Then after a grounder moved them both up 90 feet, Willis came up huge with a two-RBI single up the middle. Nieves doubled home Willis to put the Slammers up three. After Hector Pellot was hit by a pitch, Lis singled in Nieves. Lis was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double but the damage was done.
Joliet did not take their foot off the pedal though. In the fifth inning they plated five runs to extend the lead to 9-0. Estand got things going with a single to left. Brad Netzel followed with a single of his own. Then Willis executed a perfect bunt down the third base line. Schaumburg pitcher Wally Goodline threw low to first and everyone was safe. Estand scored on the play for Joliet. Nieves drew a walk and one out later Lis smacked a sacrifice fly. The hit parade continued when Kyle Maunus doubled home Nieves. After Zach Mandelblatt drew a walk, Fox delivered a two-RBI single to complete the scoring in the frame.
A Nieves sacrifice fly in the sixth scored Estand to put Joliet up 10-0. Estand went 4-4 in the game with three runs scored and a RBI.
Meanwhile Tietze, who moved to the starting rotation towards the end of 2011, was excellent. He struck out four batters while only giving up one hit in his three innings of work.
Maxwell, who pitched in the College World Series for TCU, was very good through his first two innings of work but did give up a couple of runs in the sixth as the Boomers cut the Slammers' lead to 10-2.
Joliet immediately responded with three in the seventh thanks to some wildness from Schaumburg reliever Jamaal Hollis. The inning featured two walks, a wild pitch, two hit by pitches, including one with the bases loaded, and a RBI single from Estand.
The Boomers did score four runs in the seventh but by then it was too little too late. Joliet would complete the scoring in the ninth as rookie Michael Corrigan doubled to start the frame. He advanced to third on a balk and scored on a Kasarjian sacrifice fly.
