
Miners Lose Home Exhibition Opener

Marion, IL - The Miners and Gateway Grizzlies played for the second time in two days each winning as visitors. The Grizzlies defeated the Miners 4-1.
Shawn Gilblair got the start for the Miners today. He threw three innings and allowed one run. He gave up two hits and struck out one. The Grizzlies got on the board first in the top of the second as Nick Popescu hit a one out single to bring in Joe Weik after Weik stole second.
Alex Kaminsky pitched well for the Grizzlies as he went three innings and only gave up one hit and walked one while strinking out one. The Miners didn?t get on the board until the bottom of the fourth when Chad Maddox hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Jonathan Gonzalez to bring in Jake Kaase after Kaase hit a one out triple.
It was Gateway the rest of the way as they added two runs in the top of the six off Ian Campbell. With runners on first and third with no one out Sam Mahoney grounded out to bring in a run. Then Case Rigby belted a two out single to give the Grizzlies a 3-1 lead. The Grizzlies added one more run in the top of the eight off Ryan Quigley.
Gabriel Shaw pitched the ninth for the Miners. He allowed a hit and struck out a batter. Kolby Moore, Philip Reamy, Chris Enourato, and Maurice Bankston came in after Gonzalez. Combined they threw five innings of one hit ball and struck out four.
The Miners travel to Evansville tomorrow night for more exhibition play. The Miners played the Otters last Saturday at Paducah, Kentucky. The game will be broadcasted on US 97.7 and streamed online at www.southernillinoisminers.com. The pregame show will be at 6:40 with first pitch scheduled at 7:00.
