Grizzlies Get Some Defensive Insurance

WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH (Apr. 9, 2003) - The Utah Grizzlies announced today that they have signed defenseman Ben Storey who played this season with the Lexington Men-O-War of the East Coast Hockey League.

Storey, 25, appeared in 62 games with Lexington this season scoring 18 goals and adding 27 assists. He also tallied 11 power play goals, which ranked him fourth in the ECHL among defenseman. The Men-O-War season ended this past week when they dropped a first round ECHL playoff series to Toledo. Storey had an assist in three playoff games.

The Ottawa, Ontario native was originally a fourth round draft selection (98th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He spent three seasons with the Avalanche's top AHL developmental team, the Hershey Bears, between 1998-2001 recording a total of 38 points (8-30=38) in 128 games.

The 6-1, 205-pound defenseman spent last season playing in Austria where he had 21 points (5-16=21) in 30 games for Zell Am SEE EK.

The Grizzlies open their run for the Calder Cup on Thursday night in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton where they begin a best-of-three qualifying round series against the Penguins.
